travel in japan

travel in japan

Akihabara first started specializing in electronics when people dealing in black market radio parts began setting up shop under the elevated JR railroad after World War II. As Japan's manufacturing technology and economy grew during the 50's and 60's, the shops starting selling televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, and other consumer household goods.
Many computer stores started opening stores in Akihabara during the PC boom of the 80's and 90's, and otaku obsessed with computers and anime poured into the area. Japanese electronics manufacturers sometimes send prototypes of new products to Akihabara stores in order to see how popular they are with consumers there before release them into the national and international markets.

The urban legend that Coca Cola was originally green when it was first created is actually false (according to the company itself), but the idea still lives on in the hearts and minds of many of us. So it was with no little excitement that I first beheld Asahi's 'Green Cola' sitting on the convenience store shelves. It didn't take me long to figure out what was wrong though, it's not actually green. Sigh. Turns out that the 'green' isn't referring to the colour, but to the supposedly ecological way it's made. However there doesn't seem to be anything particularily environmentally friendly about it, unless the assertion that the drink's lack of colourants, caffeine and preservatives is supposed to equal green? Maybe Asahi is hoping people would focus on the gimmick instead of asking questions.Mt. Kumotori is Tokyo's highest mountain at 2012 meters. The route Kumi and I took started from Mitsumine shrine (Chichibu), finished in Kamosawa (Okutama), and required an overnight stay in a mountain lodge called Kumotori Sanso. The day started grey and overcast (as many Tokyo weekends are prone to do) but we decided to bite the bullet and just go, having planned this hike a number of weeks ago. We arrived at Mitsumine shrine (above photo) at around 11am (about 3.5 hours from our apartment) and took a quick look around the complex. Although the 2000 year old mountain shrine is supposedly worth a second look, we didn't stay long as it was already late in the morning and we had a 6 hour hike ahead of us. Although it wasn't raining, there was a dense mist surrounding everything.Kumi registers us for our hike at the beginning of the trail (below shot), in case we get lost or eaten by bears.
Akihabara now has over 250 electronics stores, from huge megachains to small part suppliers. Most of the shops are gathered around Akihabara Station and along Chuo Dori (Chuo Avenue), and many of the bigger ones have staff that speak English, Chinese, and Korean. Prices can vary significantly between stores and, unlike most places in Japan, are sometimes negotiable.
Many of the electronics in Akihabara are for use in Japan only and overseas shoppers should be sure to check voltage and warranty requirements before buying electronics to use at home. Duty free shopping is also available to foreigners (passport required) on purchases of more than 10,000 yen at some of the larger stores

Nintendo 3DS to feature intrusive DRM

Nintendo 3DS to feature intrusive DRM

Once Nintendo's 3DS price and release date became official, pre-orders have been very strong, but HULIQ News must pass along a word of warning about the device's digital rights management (DRM) controls.

Nintendo 3DS in Aqua Blue
Though Microsoft's Kinect peripheral and its Xbox 360 console remain the most popular gaming hardware items at retail currently, every indicator suggests that will change on March 27th when Nintendo's 3DS handheld system become available. In fact, in HULIQ's most recent weekly tracking chart, pre-orders for the 3DS took the fifth and sixth spots.
That said, Wired spoke with Nintendo's Bill Trinen uncovered something rather interesting about Nintendo's DRM restrictions for the system. Though Nintendo does allow for owners of a current DS system to import digital purchases (as well as game data) stored on an SD card to their shiny new 3DS, content bought on that new system will be locked to that particular system. This is potentially worrisome for consumers, since Nintendo has a history of refreshing its handheld systems several times during a 'generation' - and could potentially be a major hassle for those replacing a system that was stolen or damaged, something that is always a risk with a handheld device.
Mr. Trinen clearly states that "once you've bought it, it's for the system you bought it on". Curiously, this contradicts Nintendo's own official page, which says that "downloadable software already purchased on a Nintendo 3DS system to another Nintendo 3DS" though only for a limited number of times. This feature will apparently be available only sometime after the system launches, and details are listed as 'coming soon', suggesting Nintendo has not yet finalized its DRM policy.
Consumers who find restrictive DRM a negative factor may want to wait for Nintendo to issue a full statement on the issue before purchasing the system if you see digital purchases in the future. Transferring licenses from one device to another, even when relatively painless (as with the Xbox 360), is still a hassle - so anything that smacks of intrusive DRM could be a potentially damaging feature of the 3DS.
Surveying various comment threads suggests this may indeed be the case for Nintendo, so it will be interesting to track precisely how strong 3DS pre-orders remain as March 27th approaches

Nintendo 3DS 400 000 sold in its first day sales in Japan

As if anyone had any doubt that the Nintendo 3DS be an overwhelming success. The 400 thousand devices offered for sale today have been exhausted. Engadget reports that some shops had rows of 2,000 people but the vast majority of places were not people waiting for the stores simply did not have stock, all sold already pre-booking sales made over a month.
We recall that in Europe we have the console available on 25th March and in America on 27 November.

Everything We Know About Wii 2

Everything We Know About Wii 2

The Wii has now entered its fifth full year on the market. It first launched in America back in November of 2006, which means four years are behind it and the fifth is now beginning. You know what that means. A new system. Nintendo consoles have traditionally only lasted for about five years before the Big N has introduced a successor.

So, even more than we already have, the gaming industry's observers will now be keeping a sharp eye on Nintendo's movements, watching and waiting for the incredibly secretive company to begin to reveal more details on the as-yet-unnamed follow-up to its highly successful Wii machine (which, for now, we'll just call Wii 2). This feature will be our base of operations as those details emerge, and we'll update it dynamically throughout the next several months (or years, if needed) as Nintendo offers more about the system and we get closer to its launch. Until then, here's everything we know:
"Wii 2" is the name we're using to refer to Nintendo's next home video gaming console, the system that will serve as a successor to the wildly successful current Wii machine. We don't yet know for sure what the system's official name will be, or if it will even continue using the brand "Wii" at all - Nintendo's had a lot of diversity in its system names over the years, from the straightforward "Nintendo Entertainment System" to titles that have highlighted form factor ("GameCube").
Wii 2 has not been officially announced by Nintendo yet, other than being confirmed to be in development by key executives with the company in various interviews. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata began to make remarks about the system as early as July 2008, when he was quoted by Forbes Magazine to say:

"We are always preparing for the next hardware," Iwata says. "We are under development."

More recently, Mr. Iwata made further remarks about the system during a Nintendo investors' Q&A event. A transcription of his statements went live on Nintendo's official site in Japan and was translated by NowGamer:

"We are of course studying and developing the next console to Wii. However, there is a big difference between studying a product and announcing what it is and when we will release it."
We don't know that yet either. We could hazard a guess and say that E3 2011 would be a good time, but that would just be speculation at this point - and right now Nintendo seems to be trying to extend the current generation and milk it for all it's worth. In a recent interview with Kotaku, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime suggested that Wii 1 would have to continue to sell several million more units before he'd even begin to discuss a successor:

"After we've reached an installed base of 45 million here in the U.S., we can have a conversation about the next generation."

The Wii has currently sold more than 30 million in America, Reggie says, so there'd still be a ways to go to hit that target. Of course it'll be Nintendo's Japanese executives, not Reggie, who will make the call of when the announcement happens. And if you look at our handy timeline below, the time certainly seems right.

Nintendo’s Success May Damage Games Industry

Nintendo’s Success May Damage Games Industry
Kaufman Bros. Equity Research analyst Todd Mitchell has given his opinion on the recent success of Nintendo’s newest two platforms currently on the market. We have provided a quote below:

Nintendo has not only increased the size of the market, but it has also re-segmented it in its own favor, in our view. Nintendo is dominating software sales on its popular hardware platforms, leaving the publishers with a smaller slice of an only somewhat incrementally larger pie.

Moreover, we feel that the likely shorter product cycles of Nintendo’s platforms puts the publishers in a permanent catch-up mode. We think the upcoming releases of Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption will highlight this phenomena this holiday season.

The public opinion goes live only days after Nintendo announced worldwide sales figures for both the Wii and Nintendo DS thus far, which have combined for form over 45 million units sold. Of those 45 million, the company has sold over 40 million DSs and around 5.8 million Wii consoles. Total sales for the 2007 fiscal year are expected to reach at least 270 billion Yen (up from 174.3 billion in 2006).
